Ever been to Colorado? If no, then this is your chance to enjoy nature at its best. Rugged alpine mountains, meandering rivers, dense natural forests, wonderful never ending landscapes and steamy springs that pop up out of nowhere in the countryside are what await you in this wonderland. If you are looking for a peaceful romantic holiday away from the hubbub of daily life, then head straight out to this absolutely breathtaking state in North America.
Situated at a corner of the state which lay still when civilization walked past is the resort called Dunton Hot Springs. A quaint hill side resort, Dunton Hot Springs sits right beside the San Juan Mountain range.
Aptly called a ghost town, the place is located in a remote part of the town and exudes complete privacy. In fact, the resort has been voted as the best Luxury Hotel in the U.S. and also as the fifth Best Hotel in the world that caters to the All Inclusive board basis.
Be prepared to pampered with the luxuries of nature and forget your cell phone for a few days. But that doesn’t mean you have to forgo your connection with the outside world. The resort has several amenities that help you keep in touch with the outside world while you enjoy a relaxing holiday, undisturbed by others.
Getting There:- The place is not hard to find as it lies just opposite to the Teluride Mountain range. Private taxis and coaches offer transportation from the airport in Colorado.
Rooms:- One look at the resort and you might tend to get a tad disappointed. For the rooms are built of wooden logs and may seem like a far cry from what you have been used to. But you will be surprised at the level of comfort and services each of them provide.
All the cabins are aesthetically furnished and contain numerous antiques.
It is astonishing to note that all the cabins have been built by hand without the help of any kind of technology.
Every cabin provides stunning views of the spectacular mountain range and the natural surroundings. The cabins are placed in a circle like format and the center space is occupied by a Dance Hall and a Saloon. Further down the road, you are bound to come across a beautiful waterfall and a small chapel which is open to the skies.
Cuisine:- The biggest surprise that awaits you in this ghost town is the amazing variety and quality of food that you get. Looking like something that jumped out of a Wild West movie, the saloon is tastefully decorated with most of the furnishings being original pieces.
Adjoining a large lounge area is a wooden bar which has the names of Butch Cassidy and Sundance carved on the surface. Apparently, this was done in an attempt to remind locals and visitors alike about the condition of Colorado in the early 18th century.
Enjoy a round of pool at the games table while your meal is being prepared. The chief chef makes sure your meals are prepared from the freshest of ingredients which include fruits and vegetables from the resort’s own field and the best of wines that are prepared from the vineyards that are located on the hotel grounds.
Meals are served on a giant sized dining table and you get to enjoy them with the rest of the guests. And if you are feeling a bit on the creative side, join the chef and cook up a storm for the rest of the guests.
General Services:- Even though the resort is located out of the way and may seem a bit different than your normal modern day hotel, the organization does make it a point to provide guests with the best of facilities for an enjoyable stay.
Even though your cell phones will not be of much use in this dense green land, the hotel provides wireless internet access for customers in the main lobby area in addition to high speed video conferencing.
There is a library and a general purpose screening room. In addition to this, the resort provides concierge service that help in transporting visitors to and from the airport.
One of the highlights of your visit to Dunton Hot Springs is the bath in a natural spring that you may never want to forget for the rest of your life. The area surrounding the resort is home to numerous natural hot water springs that formed due to tectonic movements that took place ages ago.
The temperature of the water in these springs vary between 85°F and 106°F and a bath in these springs is sure to soothe your senses. The water is said to contain healing powers and the resort has appropriately tapped the main spring water to flow into smaller ones for the benefit of the guests.
Accordingly, you can choose to bathe in a hot spring out in the open air with the snowy mountain peaks as the backdrop or in a river called the Christoph’s spring. Alternatively, you can also bathe either inside the Well House Cabin or a beautifully restored 19th century Bath house.
The resort also has two pools behind the Dunton Store Cabin and outside the Bath house respectively where the water from the main spring flows into.
A party is just what is needed to liven up the atmosphere and that’s where the Dance Hall comes into picture. Situated right beside the Saloon, this is where guests get together to enjoy some quality time together. The walls of the hall are filled with paintings that depict angels, cowboys, miners, trappers and what not!
Wait till you have a look at the state of the art gym that is present within the premises. Boasting of owning the latest in fitness equipment, the gym is just the place to head out to, to have that perfect work out.
If you are looking for a less stressful form of exercise, then take part in the Yoga classes conducted by trained professionals. Ranging from one hour to a couple of hours, these sessions are a rejuvenating experience for both body and soul. The resort also provides a massage parlor that offers soothing massages and body treatments.
Recreational Activities:- If you think you landed up in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, just wait till you see the list of activities you can indulge in. If you crave for adventure, then Dunton Hot Springs will definitely quench your thirst and thrill you with adventures you have only dreamed off.
The rugged mountain range is the perfect terrain for hiking and the resort offers frequent hiking expeditions to the nearby mountains. You can also choose to trek by foot or ride the terrain on bicycles. Horse riding is also fairly common and the trails can be anywhere from a piece of cake to nerve wracking.
Rock climbing is also a popular sport over here and there are professionals who volunteer to take you as high as 14000 feet above the San Juan mountain range if you are game for it. Fly fishing, rafting and kayaking are some of the water sports that are available.
The nearby desert beckons and desert treks are also arranged on a frequent basis. There are a number of archaeological sites around the area and the resort arranges excursions to these sites as well.
If you happen to visit during winter, don’t be disheartened, for the list of snowy activities will surpass the summer one. Ski across the country or in smaller ski trails. Heli Skiing is quite popular as is snow shoeing across the region.
Enjoy a horse ride around the resort draped in snow or dare to climb the icy peaks. For some fun in the snow, go snowmobiling or skate effortlessly in the frozen ponds. The springs operate even in the winter land and there is nothing that beats the idea of having a hot water bath in a spring that is situated in the middle of a winter wonderland!
Need to know facts:- Prior booking is seriously advised as there is slim chance you can get a cabin upon sudden arrival. The entire resort can also be booked as a whole by a single customer for group parties or family functions. The cabins, saloon, dance hall and the rest of the areas including the library, screening rooms and springs are included in the package. The entire resort can cater to a total of about 42 people.
So if you are planning an adventurous holiday or throwing a party for friends and family, and you want it to be a memorable occasion, you know where to go!
