Visit to Coorg: A Tourist’s Heaven

coorgCoorg, the anglicized name of Kodaru district in southwestern Karnataka, is a hilly region of phenomenal natural beauty, coffee plantation and an interesting mix of rich cultural history and modern tourist comfort. It is located in the Western Ghats.

Coorg is well connected to various urban centers in Karnataka. The closest airport is in Mangalore and the closest railway station is the Mysore railway station. Mangalore, Mysore, and Bangalore – the capital of Karnataka, are well connected to Coorg through roadways.

Madikeri is the districts headquarter of Coorg and is called the Scotland of India. It is a seat of hills and rivers and is the home to major tourist attractions such as the Madikeri Fort, the Omkareshwara Temple, and spectacular viewpoints like Raja’s Seat.

The other tourist interests of Coorg include the Nisargadhama Island, a picnic spot near Kushalanagara, the sacred Iruppu Falls, the beautiful Abbey Falls, the elephant training camp of Dubare, and Nagarahole National Park. Places like Bhagamandala at the cofluence of Kaveri, Kanika and the famed Sujyothi, Honamma Lake, the dazzling Mallali falls, and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary also contribute to the majestic diversity of Coorg.

Coorg has substantial claim in historical lineage and has a significant tribal population. Their life and culture is well displayed in festivals such as the harvest festivals Huthri and Puthar. Coorg is also famous for offering pulsating tourist activities such as trekking, white water rafting, angling etc. If you are a connoisseur of food, you can savor the non-vegetarian spicy delights that Coorg is famous for.
