One of the best tropical destinations in the world, the Fiji islands are world renowned for their alluring beaches and crystal clear waters. Very popular with young couples and honeymooners, it is easy to choose your own secluded island from the 322 islands that dot the ocean.
The best way to get to Fiji would be by air. Flights land at either the Nadi International Airport or the Suva Airport with the former being closer to the town. Upon arrival, officials would issue you with a month long tourist visa free of cost.
The best and only means of transport apart from walking are buses that are cheap and available aplenty. Accommodation is available for both the elite and the budget conscious traveler with numerous hotels, hostels and self catering apartments that are scattered all over the islands.
The busiest season is during the months of May and October where the islands experience a dry spell coupled with light breezes.
Revel in the dazzling white beaches, enjoy the water activities of rafting, snorkeling, surfing, coral viewing, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, sailing, Para gliding and scuba diving; hike through trials that lead you through unmatched natural landscapes and sweeping cliffs; or visit a plethora of cultural and historical sites on many of the islands. All these and more would make your holiday the most memorable one that you have had in recent times.
Sightseeing in Fiji is incomplete without visiting the following cities and their attractions.
The most sought after cities in Fiji would include Suva, which is the capital city and is the business and administration center for the island, the island of Nadi which is a growing tourist center and the island of Lautoka, which is known for its sugar cane plantations and is also called the Sugar City.
The other cities that are also favorites with tourists include Sigatoka, Savusavu, Levuka and Taveuni.
The city of Suva also houses numerous historical and cultural buildings which include;
Orchid Island Fijian Cultural Center which showcases a magnificent array of plants, crafts and rituals carried out by the island’s ancestors. The Crested Lguanna, found only in Fiji is present here.
You can also visit a comparatively smaller museum which provides details of Fijian History and the largest double hulled canoe (called drua) in Fiji.
Suva Municipal Market is the liveliest market as well as the largest in the whole of the South Pacific region. Situated right across the Suva flea market, the municipal market sells local fruits and vegetables. Visit this marketplace and you will be swallowed by the hustle and bustle which is an idea of how a normal day in Fiji would be like.
The Sri Siva – Subramaniya Temple in the city of Nadi is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Providing an insight into the island’s rich cultural heritage, the temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is divided into 3 sections.
Do remember to be seriously calm when you visit this temple as the underlying architecture and the works on the statues that adorn the pillars indicate the effort that had been put into creating this structure. Religion and respect for it is rendered with utmost sincerity here and the same is expected of the visitors too.
The Fiji Museum in Suva is again a cultural feast to visit. View the various artifacts dating back to the days of the first settlement and writings about the country’s past.
The main galleries of the museum include; the Masi Gallery dedicated for traditional cloth, the Pre Historic Gallery which showcases ancient Vitian culture, and a History Gallery. You can also attend a pottery making demonstration, visit the video theater or take a ride on a drua.
