mountain-driveThere is no doubt that the best way (in many cases the only way) to travel on mountains is by road. It can be the most exhilaration and fulfilling experience. Only if your car creates no trouble on the way. Here are some important things to keep in mind to make every trip to the mountains memorable.

First of all, check wear and tear of the tyres. Irregular wear and tear may indicate a problem with the suspension.

Top up on the brake oil. Check the brake shoes and brake pressure thoroughly.

Lubricant oil is the main thing to keep your car running smoothly. Check gears, engine and differential oils are all at correct levels.

Change the fuel, air and oil filters before starting for a long drive.

Avoid using a battery which is over two years old .

The horn should be in perfect condition, especially on mountainous roads.

Check the focus of car head lamps, specially for bumpy rides.

Check all shock absorbers before starting out.

Tyres may get damaged if the wheels aren’t aligned properly. Wheel imbalance causes the car to shake at higher speeds.

Check wiper blades, especially in the rainy season.

Always check radiator coolant and horse pipes to avoid a breakdown in summer traffic jams.

Here is a check list of spares you need to carry with you.

First, headlight bulbs and tool & screwdriver sets, wrench, key set, jack and jack rod, wheel spanner, a knife and torch.

Main leaf springs are a must to carry , especially of you know that the ride ahead is bumpy (like the roads in Ladakh).

In case, your ride (or others, for that matter) needs to be rescued, carry a tow chain. You may not find new tubes in small settlements, so extra tyre tubes are a must. A small shovel can be very handy in a snow bound region.

Stock up on petrol or diesel at a station before going into wilder climes. While driving, keep as close to the mountain side as possible.

To sum it up, Jim Morrison said “Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel”. All set to roll then !
