Haunted houses and eerie places have always been a fascination for people. Be it a site in their own hometown or in some far off place, the thought of steeping into a supposedly haunted mansion or ground is enough to send jitters down ones’ spine. However, the curiosity and exhilaration that comes with discovering something new overcomes fear and so haunted places are regularly frequented by locals and tourists alike.
One of the most popular haunted houses in the entire world is perhaps the Amityville Horror House in Long Island, New York. The house and its eerie tale have been the back drop of numerous films and books that had been centered on the house and its occupants. What was once an untouched site is now a major tourist attraction with many tourists visiting it in the day and even some at night.
Location:The Amityville Horror House is located at 112 Ocean Ave, Amityville in New York. It is not hard to miss the house as it is one of the most sought after tourist attractions in Long Island. If you catch a cab, just ask the cab driver for details and you are bound to get an entire story.
Story behind the house: It is not clear as to what exactly happened in the house but in 1974, a young man called Ronald DeFeo, the occupant of the house back then, killed his entire family which included his parents and four siblings with a high powered rifle. In his testimony, Ronald had apparently told the police that he had heard voices in his head asking him to do the ghastly deed.
The house was let up for sale and a year later, another family moved in. The Lutz family was happy at first on getting a lakefront property at such a great deal. But soon, their happiness turned into a nightmare when supposedly paranormal activities started taking place in the house. It was too much for the Lutz family to bear when after a brief stay of 28 days, they deserted the house in the middle of the night.
Fact or Fiction: Over the years, the story of the house and the encounters faced by the Lutz family has been played back and forth numerous times. Many skeptics say that the family may have over exaggerated on many occasions while narrating their story.
According to the Lutz family, some of the incidents that occurred quite frequently in the house included flies appearing out of nowhere, revolving crucifixes, phone calls being interrupted with strange noises, doors ripping off from their hinges, and a ghastly being with red eyes showing its presence with their daughter.
At first the Lutz family declared that the being was in fact a pig but later retracted their statement when they said they were not sure what the apparition resembled. They stated that a priest had also been summoned to the house on more than one occasion and had to leave with blisters and cuts on his hands.
After the Lutz family left the house, it remained vacant for a long time. The owners who occupied the house after the Lutz family however had no such incidents to report and that itself was enough to put a big damper on the Lutz’s story.
It remains to be seen if the house is actually haunted or not. Whatever be the case, the house still remains to this day and draws hordes of visitors through its doors every year. If you visit Long Island in New York, don’t miss out on this splendid opportunity to visit the house and who knows? You may just be lucky enough to get contacted by an entity from the other world!
