Wonderful tourist destination
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is an autonomous region of Italy. It is an enchanting blend of azure sea, sandy beaches, excellent climate and historical remains of many centuries. All these are ideal ingredients for making this wonderful island a popular tourist destination.
Man-made wonders
The ancient Su Nuraxi archaeological site at Barumini is a unique complex built in stone around a tall tower for fortifying the village. It was excavated out in the 1950s of what was then assumed to be a hillock. The complexity of the structure was so extraordinary that it got the UNESCO accolade of World Heritage Site in 1997.
Hundreds of stone buildings of lesser antiquity and smaller dimensions still dot the island’s landscape, providing ample proof that these were dwelling units where local inhabitants lived happily for several centuries, enjoying the ample foodgrain, sea food and livestock that the island provided. These wonderrful structures also bear the testimony of the level of skills that those ancient creative people had acquired. Travelers floock to Sardinia to marvel at these man-made wonders and the island benefits from the revenue that tourism generates. Sardinia is well connected with major European cities through three international airports.
Cagliari, the capital city
One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities is Cagliari which is also the island’s capital. Its location between the sea and fertile land, surrounded by swamps and high and forested mountains provided natural defences from invaders in the past. This charming city has now all modern amenities and still retains its old-world charms. The best way to enjoy the city’s bewitching attractions is to explore it leasurely by walking.
The well planned piazzas will not let you getting lost but keep a map ready, anyway. The signages are usually in Italian. Walk through the city’s lively fish market and the attractive African, Chinese and Indian shops selling all varieties of designer shoes. The famous houses of Tiffany, Carier and Bvlagri have their showrooms here.
Spend an early evening watching the glorious sunset from the Poetto beach. You get delicious seafood at the beach which is also a good place to get to know other tourists and locals.
Costa Smeralda
This enchanting coastal resort area is a paradise for lovers of all hues, including aqua-sports and nature. The azure gleam emanating from the sea, rocky formations jutting out from the frothy sparkles of the bays, the wooded mountains at a distance make this seafront a favorite haunt for the rich and the famous.
Travel by car
There are so many places to see in Sardinia that you would either need a long time to explore it, or you have to make several visits. The best way to exploit Sardinia’s full potential is to use a car. Italy leads the world in making classy cars and comfortable roads.
Food and drinks
Sardinians love their food. Besides being traditional bakers, they are excellent in preparing delicious roasted meat. They also excel in preparing seafood by using their own age-old techniques. Sardinians love their wine perhaps more and must have a glass of the red variety. You can of course have more, being their guests!
