macedoniaMacedonia is in the southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula. It is generously endowed with natural beauty and man-made creations. Lofty mountains, calm lakes, gorgeous rivers and a number of archaeological monuments attract tourists to this charming little country steeped in history.

Because of its strategic location Macedonia had close links with neighboring countries for centuries. Mighty empires like Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, ruled over this country at different periods of time and left their legacies behind. Macedonia developed a hybrid culture and unique architectural style that makes the country attractive to the outside world. It has become a favorite tourist attraction not only because of its historical heritage, but also because of the hospitable nature, warmth and liberal views of the people and their merry-go-round carefree lifestyle. All that tourists expect to find in a host country are available here. It offers all modern comforts; a vibrant nightlife, colorful festivities, exotic local cuisine and wine.

Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, is a charming ancient city dating back to the days of Alexander the Great. Interesting places to visit are the 6th century castle known as Kale Fortress, and some beautiful churches built during the Byzantine period. The city’s Old Town has strong Turkish influence with cobbled-stone narrow streets lined with little shops, outdoor open markets and Turkish baths, tempting restaurants selling succulent kebab and Ottoman mosques. The capital city now has swanky shopping malls, cafes, bars, grand hotels, and theatre and concert halls.

Ohrid, located in the southwestern part of Macedonia on the shore of Lake Ohrid, is the most popular place for tourists. The lake not only pampers local fishermen to haul delicious trout from its waters, but is also the sole provider of beaches to this landlocked country. Ohrid has a number of old monuments like Samuel’s Fortress and the Antique Theatre.

The country’s second largest city is Bitola where most archaeological sites are located. Besides some old Byzantine churches, it also has many monuments of the Ottoman period. An interesting area of the city is Sirok Sokak which is a street only for pedestrians and is lined with interesting shops and restaurants.

Skopje and Ohrid offer trendy to budget hotels that start from about 50 euros. Bitola has only a few hotels and don’t cost more than 30 euros. Traditional cuisine is a blend of Balkan and Mediterranean dishes. Centuries of Turkish influence is reflected in grilled kebabs.

Macedonia is an interesting blend of materialistic Europe and mystical Orient; and that makes the country an enchanting place to visit.
