Lombardy, one of the 20 regions of Italy, is home to the world famous Lake Como. At a depth of 400 meters, it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe. The lake is just half an hour from noisy and bustling Milan and many see it as a place of tranquility, with its Mediterranean foliage and snowy Alpine peaks. It is frequented by aristocrats and boasts of many artistic and cultural gems. Geographically, Lake Como resembles the character ‘Y’. It is fed by the Adda river, which enters the lake near the town of Colico, and flows out at Lecco. Although famous world over as ‘Lake Como’, it’s original latin name is Larius, but this name is hardly used.

The lake has seen the development of many lavish villas over the last 1000 years. Many of the villas are adorned by admirable gardens, which have tropical as well as temperate plants, thanks to the mild weather induced by the lake. The Villa Carlotta, The Villa d’Este, The Villa del Balbianello,

The Villa Mezzi and The Villa Serbelloni are some of the prominent villas present here that you can visit while planning your trip to Lame Como. The lake has also been featured in some Hollywood films. Stars like George Clooney and Sylvester Stallone have even purchased their own private villas here to make the most of the tranquil, scenic beauty.

Transport in the lake is mostly conducted by the highly developed ferry system linking the dozens of towns and villages situated around the Lake. It is controlled by a government organization and currently provides only three services; ‘Motorship’, ‘Fast Services’ and ‘Ferries’.

Besides the numerous villas, Lake Como is also home to the Sacred Mount of Ossuccio. It is located on a hillside slope along the western edge of the lake. In 2003, UNESCO placed it in the World Heritage List.

Lake Como has become a popular tourist attraction. It is also a venue for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Although the lake has been recently criticized for not maintaining hygienic conditions, it still attracts thousands every year.
