But not many know that Goa, which is inspired by Portuguese traditions, is also equally famous with tourists from around the world for its carnival which generally takes place around February every year, around 6 week prior to Easter.

Colorful and decorated floats kick start the celebrations. An important event is the appointment of King Momo as Goa’s king. He also visits Panaji, the capital of Goa and is followed by his subjects. From this time onwards, the city comes alive with dances, performances, street shows and varied kind of celebrations which can be enjoyed by everyone. Samba, fire breathing, circus and salsa specialists and marathi dancers in colorful dresses take to the roads and perform with full swing.

When it comes to food, you can expect a hearty spread of delicious cuisine like Indian, Chinese and continental. There is also a grand show of mud pelting, waste vegetable pelting and egg attack in which people throw things at each other just for fun. Shoes and other household items which are no longer required are also thrown as part of a tradition of starting afresh in life. You can also try the Goan delicacies and the famous drink Feni. It is also the time when you will see the perfect amalgamation between the different traditions, cuisines and styles of India. Indian culture is also blended well with Portuguese tradition in Goa.

It is the perfect time to indulge in merry making, partying, feasting and enjoying. Parades, bands and masked revelers crowd the streets and entertain the public. This festival lasts for 3 days. Following this grand celebration, people observe a fast for 40 days in which they stay away from meat till Easter arrives.
