Have a joy ride in India’s IT capital!
Who hasn’t heard the phrase, ‘Bangalored’? When President Obama, barely weeks into his presidency, declared that companies that are outsourcing to Bangalore would no longer get tax incentives, and said that it is time jobs remained in Buffalo, some were puzzled, and some were amused. On account of this policy, one doesn’t quite know if ‘Bangalored’ will continue to be as dreaded a word as it was. But one thing is certain –Bangalore will continue to remain in the limelight for some more time to come.
To hundreds of thousands of IT-BT related professionals and employees of all hue and color, Bangalore is known as just the IT capital of India. It indeed is, but has it been like this since its birth? Not many would be aware that Bangalore has never had the kind of economic growth of the kind, say Mumbai has had for decades before independence.
Till the explosion of the IT industry a couple of decades back, Bangalore was a world away from what it now is. It was a sleepy town best known for its salubrious climate and wonderfully affable people. People, even in several other parts of India had hardly known Bangalore as anything other than by its famous sobriquets, “Pensioner’s Paradise” and “Garden City”. It is today both of these still, but for the wrong reasons! It is a paradise for killers of pensioners, if the terrifying trend of killing of old-aged people is an indication. Its few remaining gardens are a joint for lovers and people carrying out nefarious and illicit activities.
How did Bangalore lose out on its originality? What are the places to be now see here? How much does Bangalore still have to offer the visitor? Come and explore these and other related questions!
