Fun in Acapulco

It was an important seaport for centuries and became a holiday resort for the rich and famous since 1930s. Because of its enchanting natural beauty enhanced by the blue Atlantic, golden beaches and rocky mountains, Acapulco became a favorite location for Hollywood films. Paramount produced a popular film in 1963 starring Elvis Presley and Ursula Andress and named it Fun in Acapulco.

Over the years Acapulco has acquired an extraordinary reputation as the quintessential fun city of opulent nightclubs, discos, luxurious hotels, lavish lifestyle, wide shopping opportunities and exciting water sports. Tourists find it irresistible to enjoy the sadistic pleasure of watching suicidal acts of courageous and exceptionally skilled cliff divers plunging into a treacherous sea from a height of 130 feet. For these reasons and also for its natural beauty, Acapulco is also a favorite honeymoon destination.

Acapulco is no longer the exclusive playground of the Hollywood celebrities and paparazzi alone. More people with plenty of disposable income now flock to this place to have a good time.

Acapulco’s attractions are not only limited to its boisterous nocturnal activities. The city offers interesting sights within and around it. Hire a taxi and drive along the main highway. There are many points from where you will get fantastic views of the crescent-shaped Acapulco Bay. Come out of the cab, hold your companion’s hand, and watch the magnificent sunset.

Acapulco is famous for its superb beaches, clean and almost never ending from the east to west points of the Bay. Most popular beaches are located in the old portion of the city. Book a hotel near the Bay. A good hotel will cost you around US$100.

Visit the fort of San Diego built in the 18th century to protect the prosperous port city from pirates. It is now converted into a historical museum. Swashbuckling John Wayne or debonair actor Gregory Peck, both longtime residents of the city, probably didn’t visit it; but you should, to get a glimpse into the city’s past. It is close to the Plaza in old city. Sit in a roadside bar and sip tequila, the national drink, and watch the local people selling colorful shirts and panama hats to tourists.
