fuerteventuraThe second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura also happens to be the island that is closest to the African border with just a small channel separating the two entities. The entire island is filled with sandy beaches bordering huge sand dunes. Tourists hound the destination for its beaches and surf.

The Fuerteventura Airport is located in the center of the island and close to the capital, Puerto Del Rosario. Cabs and bikes provide the common means of transport in and around the island. Ferries take visitors to neighboring islands of Gran Canaria, Teneriffe and Lanzarote.

The island boasts of a sunny climate and winters are not that harsh. So bring along light clothing though you may need a woolen jersey if the night gets chilly which is rare. Therefore, anytime would be the best time to visit the island.

What Fuerteventura lacks in terms of theme parks, nature parks and inland activities, it covers up by providing tourists some of the most spectacular beaches in the world, fun filled days by the beach and historical excursions into town. Windmills are scattered across the island and bear witness to the traditional occupation of farming.

Do not miss the tourist resorts of Corralejo up North where the nights are livelier and the crowded beaches welcome party goers. A visit to the Atlantico Commercial Center and Flag Beach is recommended.

Caleta De Fuste is the man made resort that caters to tourists with artificial beaches and imported golden sand from Egypt. Jandia on the other hand, has some of the most beautiful natural beaches and hosts the P.W.A World Windsurfing Speed and slalom contest. A surfer’s dream come true, the resort is relatively quieter and is frequented by families and honeymoon coupes who want to enjoy some peace and quiet.

The capital, Puerto Del Rosario itself is a dainty little town and showcases the ancient architectural structures of Fuerteventura. The town of Betancuria houses a picturesque church and an archaeological museum with exhibits on the ancient traditions and cultures of the island.

If you want to go on a sightseeing expedition, you can opt for a ferry travel to Lanzarote. The island of Los Lobos is just about 6 square meters and provides the perfect landscape for nature walks and some private time together by the beach.

Water sports are what draw the maximum number of visitors to this island. The annual surfing event of P.W.A World Windsurfing speed and slalom championship is conducted in the island of Sotavento down south.

Divers can enjoy the natural beauty of the underwater world in the crystal clear waters of Pajara and Jandia. It’s not only the colorful corals and fishes that attract you but also rock over hangings and underwater caves formed due to volcanic activity.

Fishing is also a popular sport and you will definitely catch a fish as thousands of fishes pass through the narrow channel between the island and the African continent.
