dogs-in-carFirst of all, do you think your pet is fit enough to travel long distances? If your answer is no, then it’s better to keep it at home. But if you think your pet can manage long journeys, read on.

The person who will guide you in the best possible way is the vet. He can check the conditions in which you are going to travel, the pet’s health, its behaviour etc and then advice you appropriately. The best thing to do when you are travelling with your pet is to get it accustomed to travelling. Rather than making it a surprise for your pet, make sure that it has enough experience and practice of knowing what is in store for it.

Take it for small trips and picnics. Make sure to take enough food and toys for your pet so that it can be busy with them and you can have a peaceful journey. Take along enough water for your pet, since it can be dehydrated because of the long tiring journey. In case your pet feels scared, assure it by patting its back. The continuous movement of vehicles can scare it. If possible, shield the window with a small curtain during a hot summer day, to protect it from the harsh sun rays.

There is always a possibility of your pet running away from you during traffic signals, so it’s a good idea to tie an ID card to their neck. This will help it to be united with you in case it gets lost. Tightly put a leash around your pet to make sure it stays in place. Keep checking on its health and well-being throughout the journey. Don’t just keep it tucked in a crate, allow it to enjoy the journey, get some fresh air and see the wonderful sights through the window. But at the same time, don’t allow it to peep out of the window since this can be dangerous. Give the pet its space and take breaks in between your long drives for a walk with your pet.

Remember to keep things ready to clean up in case of emergencies. In case you step out of the car for some reason, don’t leave your pet behind, since it can be stolen or can get lost. Don’t keep the pet on your lap or try to play with it while driving. Driving is a serious job and many lives can be at stake. Don’t fool around with the pet or try to feed it as you drive. Let that job be done by your relative or whoever is sitting next to you.

Following these simple tips will help you and your pet have a safe and happy journey.

Have got 2 pets at home, but never thought of taking it outdoors. After having such good piece of information would definately take them for outings.
