Eating Out in Macau

Situated on the southeast coast of China and about 60 km away from Hong Kong, this ex-Portuguese colony is a melting pot of international cuisine. Most restaurants are concentrated in downtown Macau. Even open air roadside stalls serve delicious steaming food. The option for eating out is huge in Macau.

Macau is a gourmets’ paradise. China’s fondness for good food is legendary. The Portuguese, because of their colonial expansion in different parts of the world, not only looted their wealth but also mastered the art of hybrid cooking.

Come to Macau and, besides sightseeing, enjoy the local food. There are authentic – and usually not expensive – restaurants near the seafront serving varieties of superbly cooked dishes.

Café Bela Vista is the Mandarin Oriental hotel’s signature restaurant. It is elegantly designed in the style of a traditional Portuguese villa and serves exquisite Portuguese and Macanese cuisine.

The menu also includes international dishes. Opt for a popular buffet and take small portions of different preparations that include African chicken and Macanese crab.

The aroma of roasting coffee beans will lead you to this delightful Portuguese café called Café Ou Mun. It serves reasonably priced set lunches, pastries and breads and fresh-brewed coffee.

Fernando’s is an iconic Macanese restaurant located in a beachside bungalow. It serves superb Portuguese fare with jug-full of brandy-based red sangria.

Varieties of Portuguese wines are displayed in attractive bottles around the dining room. The perfect place to sip this nectar is under the big tree in the courtyard, especially when your companion is with you.

For an unforgettable dining experience head for Ristorante il Teatro, an Italian restaurant with open kitchen, allowing you to view what is being cooked. You get here traditional Italian pizzas, salads and varieties of delicacies from Southern Italy. It is open only for dinner.

Sai Nam is famous for sea food, especially shark fin soup. It is a great place to pick up the fresh catch of the day. But where are you going to cook? Gift one to your hotel if you really like the place and get some discount on your bill!

Don Alfonso is the brainchild of a flamboyant painter but the food served here is devoid of flamboyance. It offers fresh and organic food. No eggs are used for preparing handmade pasta. Delicious fish and meat based dishes are served.

Dine at least once at Robuchon A Galera, Macau’s most expensive and exclusive restaurant. It is one of the 10 top French restaurants in the world. Their 12-course menu is the most memorable dining experience on this island.

There are so many good dining options in Macau that it would take the shape of a tome if all are listed. Try some of the above places during your stay in Macao.
